This repair tip if for an RCA model 50LB45RQ. This TV came in my shop
dead. Only front panel red LED was on. All power supply voltages were
present except the PS on voltage from main board did not change when I
pressed the power button. This indicated a possible main board issue.
After replacing the main board the TV came on but the picture was grainy
and solarized. To correct this problem I had to enter the factory
service menu by pressing the menu button on the remote followed by the
numbers 1147 while the TV was on. After the service menu came up I
scrolled down to the LVDS map and changed this setting to the option
which said 8 bit A and my picture returned to normal.

This book is a bit spendy but nevertheless it's the best book I have
ever read on switch mode power supplies. Because Jestine works as a
repair technician he is good at getting right to the main points we need
to understand about this kind of power supply rather than just being
good at general theory.
Since a majority of the problems I have seen
on LCD TVs are related to bad power supplies this is one book I highly
recommend. Most of the book was easy reading with plenty of pictures and

you see me repairing in this video is a Polaroid TDA03211C I have also
seen an almost identical power supply in a brand called Element. The
parts I replaced in this TV were Two N channel Mosfets. location was Q17
AND Q18 Both part numbers were FQPF9N50CF. The location of the
electrolytic capacitors is EC17 AND EC18 both were 10 MF at 450 volts.
Note. on some models they use Mylar capacitors which may not be bad.
Their location is C72 & C73. The blown fuse was located next to the
largest capacitor on the power supply board was location F2. It's a
3.16 amp fuse. It may be tricky to spot because its a glass fuse covered
in green plastic which makes it look like a resistor. Fuse F1 was okay
in this case. This power supply often has a bad Diode which can
contribute to problems. Its location is D10 someone suggested ECG 576
might be a good replacement for this diode but I have not verified their
suggestion. A word of caution. Many people who have this same power
supply have mistakenly assumed the large 150 mf 450 volt capacitor is
bad just because the plastic on it top is bulge from heat and air
pressure.

Finding bad solder connections is generally an easy thing to do when you

Many
times bad capacitors can be momentarily restored to their normal
capacity with the use of heat. This will not work if your capacitor is
internally shorted or to dried out.. My demonstration is not meant to
encourage the use of a hair dryer in place of a good capacitor tester
but it can be helpful in doing a quick estimate.

I remember being told that the Cold Cathode Fluorescent Lamps on LCD TV's will draw more current as they begin to age due to a build up of carbon, After replacing a burnt out inverter transformer with a new one, I used my temperature probe on each of the 4 output transformers to see if my replacement transformer was operating at a higher temperature than the others, and i noticed it was. My first thought was there might have been an issue with the replacement transformer, so I tried swapping locations with one of the other transformers, but it still ran hot. My youtube friend Norcal715 suggested there might be an issue with AC ripple distorting the drive pulse going to the transformer due a bad electrolytic capacitor, but. when I examined the transformer inputs I noticed they all shared the same source, so this ruled out there being a bad capacitor on the input side, I also checked my ceramic capacitors on the outside and they all checked okay, and this led me to the conclusion that my Cold Cathode Fluorescent Lamps were starting to draw more current than they should due to a carbon build up from natural aging. The TV I repaired is a Samsung Model LN40B550K1F. The inverter board number is a BN44-00264B. The transformer part number is QGAH02095.
